DNS Propagation: How Long Does It Take? Print

  • 0

When you change DNS records or nameservers, the changes may not appear immediately everywhere. This process is called DNS propagation.

How Long Does DNS Propagation Take?

  • DNS changes can usually start appearing within a few minutes.

  • In some cases, changes may take up to 24–48 hours to fully propagate.

  • The exact time depends on DNS caching and the TTL (Time to Live) of the previous records.

What Can Cause Delays?

Common reasons include:

  • DNS records are still cached by your ISP or local DNS resolver.

  • The domain's TTL has not expired.

  • Nameserver changes have not fully propagated.

  • DNS records were added or modified at the wrong DNS provider.

How to Check DNS Propagation

You can use online DNS checking tools to verify whether your domain is resolving correctly from different locations.

You can also use commands such as:

nslookup yourdomain.com

or

dig yourdomain.com

Important

If the DNS record is correct on the authoritative nameserver but is not yet visible on your local network, wait for the cache to expire before making further changes.

If the domain is still not resolving after the expected propagation period, check the nameservers and DNS records again or contact Prabhu Host support for assistance.
